Is rewriting the same as redirecting?
No. A rewrite is internal and the visitor's address bar does not change. A redirect sends the browser to a different URL and is visible.
Do clean URLs help SEO?
Mildly and indirectly. Readable URLs earn better click-through and cleaner inbound links; the rewrite itself is not a ranking factor.
Will these rules work on nginx?
No. These are Apache mod_rewrite directives. nginx uses its own rewrite and try_files syntax inside the server block.
